Printer Hard drive failure after only 6 months! August 26, 2010 Susan J. Fry I have owned the Epson Artisan 50 for about 6 months and have had problems with the CD/DVD label making tray not feeding into the printer properly. It is very touchy and requires playing around with it in order for it to work properly. Today I got an error message stating the tray was not in the correct position but I knew IT WAS! I tried the trouble shooting guide and was prompted to contact Epson Support. I could not email them on the site I was directed to because an error message kept coming up about the model information not being properly supplied, but there was no box to supply that information to begin with. I called customer support and was directed to try several steps and still no luck at getting the CD label to print. The tech concluded that the printer hard drive had failed after only 6 months! The unit was still under warranty and the tech said another (refurbished model) would be shipped to me and I could just throw out the bad unit. I no longer have much faith in Epson printers. The Epson R380 I owned before the Artisan lasted barely over a year and that printer hard drive failed as well. It seems as though a printer should be built to last longer than 6 months to a year. When the unit was working properly it did turn out some nice quality prints, however, the ink is costly and this model guzzles a large quantity of ink! When the refurbished model they are sending me dies, I am done investing in Epson.
no two-sided printing for Mac OSX August 23, 2010 T Arthur (PA ,USA) The printer itself seems OK. Set up with no major problems and print quality is comparable with other ink jets. However, if two-sided printing is a factor in your decision, it is supported for the windows print driver, but not with the current latest version of the Mac printer driver downloaded from the Epson support site.
Great Little Printing Machine August 19, 2010 Sigs (Salinas, CA USA) I purchased the Artisan 50 Printer specifically to print on DVD's and CD's which is does very well with ease. The results are very professional in appearance, and the need for dealing with labels is a thing of the past. Printing is also easily accomplished and uncomplicated. I highly recommend this printer for everyday use at home or in the office.
Epson is a Rip-Off August 18, 2010 Roberto 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I just received this printer today and am already giving it a "1", not for the printer itself but for the company. Here's why: I bought this printer because I had a perfectly good Epson Stylus Photo R380 that suddenly would not work because it would not "recognize" an ink cartridge. Thinking I had a defective cartridge, I bought another one and got the same error message. After checking the contacts on the cartridge and printer, and fiddling around with the printer, I could never make it recognize the new cartridge and the printer does not work without all cartridges recognized. An internet search revealed this is a reported problem with Epson printers. So, a fine printer is trashed for a seemingly minor problem, and I wasted $12 on an ink cartridge. Stupidly, I purchased another Epson (Artisan 50) primarily (like the R380), for it's CD/DVD printing capabilities. OK, so I had almost new cartridges on my non-working Epson R380 which are exactly the same cartridges as for the new one. Trying to save the packaged ones that came with the new printer for later, I just transferred the Epson cartridges from the old Epson to the new one. Guess what......THE NEW PRINTER WILL NOT RECOGNIZE PERFECTLY GOOD, AND ALMOST FULL, EPSON CARTRIDGES FROM THE OTHER PRINTER. This, combined with the $12 I wasted trying to fix the old printer with a new cartridge, means Epson made me waste almost $100 in the cost of ink cartridges (plus over $100 for this new printer) just so they can suck customers dry with their "smart" ink cartridges. Be aware that to force you to buy only new Epson ink cartridges, without very special knowledge, these cartridges will not allow you to refill them, and obviously they "know" when you are trying to use an "old", but perfectly good, cartridge from their own company. I think this could be termed "engineered waste" which our world certainly does not need. This is so poor, so extraordinarily rude and inconsiderate of customers, a total rip-off, a waste of money, ink and other resources just so Epson can gouge customers on buying more printer cartridges. Go with another company. Epson is not the only printer company in the world. I will NEVER buy another Epson product.
Epson Artison 50 August 17, 2010 Fotomann I have found this printer to be great. I got it so that I could print directly onto cd/dvd's and it does that wonderfully.
