Great player, very fast September 2, 2010 C. Vance 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this after being frustrated by the slowness of my previous blu-ray player Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p Blu-ray Player. I'm very satisfied. First of all, this is fast, powers up and loads a disc very quickly. Even if you try something that's prohibited, the "can't do that" icon is there for only a few seconds. Just long enough for you to see it. Pleasant surprises... 1. Ability to directly turn subtitles off and on via a remote control button. No need to navigate the disc menus. 2. Zoom that's useful. If you're using a projector with an anamorphic lens, this player can accommodate you. Also if you're watching a 2.35 aspect ratio movie, you can zoom to get rid of the top and bottom bars. The player will cut off the sides of the picture without distorting the picture. 3. A very comprehensive manual. If the manual of my previous player was this good, I wouldn't have been as frustrated with it. It's 74 pages long and written entirely in understandable English by a native English speaker. 4. Remote control layout makes sense to me. Download the manual to see what it looks like. 5. Illuminated control is readable in a completely dark room, no guessing what a button is. 6. Video parameters are very adjustable. This means that if your TV won't let you adjust something, you can probably compensate with the Oppo BDP-83. Look on page 51 of the manual. 7. Excellent .jpg slide viewer. Transitions and speed are adjustable. It also has random and shuffle modes. Shuffle is like random, but only shows each .jpg once. You can view EXIF data for each slide by using a button on the remote. Only wish it had one feature, the ability to do an instant replay the way dedicated DVD players can. Highly recommended.
Simply the best. End of story. Every other machine is a joke. September 2, 2010 John-Paul May (Europe) Normally I write long reviews - but there's just no point here. The OPPO is simply the best DVD player made. Quite simply nothing else compares. Nothing else is in the same league. It is literally the "rolls royce" or "mercedes benz" of players (when those companies were by far the best!) If you are a normal consumer looking to spend 100 or 200 on a BR player, spend a little more and get the Oppo (either get this model or perhaps the cheaper 80 model...ideally this model). Conversely if you are an audiophile looking to spend 1000s on a machine ... buy this first since it is (relatively) basically free and it's unlikely you'll find anything that really makes you happier. In a world that is full of CHEAP TRASH GARBAGE RUBBISH, thank goodness for Oppo. As a bonus, this is THE machine if you want an all-region player. There is a widely available hardware upgrade (they simply replace one cable inside the machine - it's nothing) which makes it the ONLY TRULY multiregion BluRay machine. THANK YOU OPPO !!!!!!!!!!

nice player with fast loading times,it plays everything. it does whats suppose to ,unlike my sony with broke twice in one year and half the time could not read the disc, even wit firmware upgrades. only complain is the flimsy drawer.

Fantastic August 14, 2010 Socal 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great player as everybody has noted in other reviews. I bought it simply based on sheer quantity and quality of Amazon reviews (and based on reviews from other Blu Ray sites). One feature that I will highlight that I did not read much about is the networking aspect. You can network the Oppo so that you can stream media from your computer - movies, music, pics, etc. You can also play files off USB drives. With the fantastic picture quality of the Oppo, it's very convenient.
